Hollow Shaft vs. Modular Encoders Back to FAQs

Hollow Shaft Encoders

VS.

Modular Encoders

Hollow shaft encoders mount by using a hollow bore into the encoder which accepts the shaft to be measured and uses an (anti-rotation) bracket to prevent rotation.

Modular encoders mount in two pieces: the magnetic rotor mounts on the shaft and the housing containing the magnetoresistive sensor bolts to the motor face.

Hollow Shaft vs. Modular
Durability and Maintenance

More vulnerable to damage. VS. + Extremely durable.

+ Quickest to replace; SMARTach encoders allow magnetoresistive sensor replacement without removing the unit.

VS.

Replacement takes longer, but Avtron THIN-LINE features make replacement faster than ever before. SMARTach encoders allow magnetoresistive sensor replacement without removing the unit.

Hollow Shaft vs. Modular
Shaft Considerations

Entire weight supported by motor shaft. VS. + Most all weight supported by bolts into motor face.
Heavy Mill Duty (weight) models have problems with small shafts. VS. + No problems with small shafts; due to light-weight magnetic rotor.
Have problems with imperfect stub shafts. VS. + Imperfect stub shafts are handled by Avtron Wide-Gap technology; competitive models may have problems.
Requires outboard seals on brake for motor/brake applications. VS. + No extra brake seals required for motor/brake applications; fits between motor and brake.
Fit medium shaft diameters (2.375” maximum M3/M4/M6). VS. + Available to fit larger shaft diameters (4.875” maximum M1250).
+ Fit almost any motor style. VS. Require face or flange mounting on motor.
+ Most Avtron models have thru-shaft or end-of-shaft capability. VS. + Most Avtron models have thru-shaft or end-of-shaft capability.

+ Tolerate axial shaft movement well.

VS.

Tolerates limited (+/-0.050”) axial shaft movement.

Hollow Shaft vs. Modular
Applications

+ Logical successor to, and replacement for, foot mounted encoders. VS. + Logical successor to, and replacement for, flange mounted, coupled encoders.

+ Traditionally used on AC motors.

VS.

+ Traditionally used on DC motors, AC use expanding.
